When an In-Person Cardiology Assessment Is Helpful
A face-to-face appointment is particularly valuable when your symptoms are ongoing, complex or likely to benefit from a cardiovascular examination. Reasons for arranging an assessment may include:
- chest pain, chest tightness or suspected angina;
- palpitations, an irregular pulse, atrial fibrillation or SVT;
- breathlessness or reduced exercise tolerance;
- dizziness, fainting or blackouts;
- high blood pressure or concerns about cardiovascular risk;
- a heart murmur, heart-valve disease or an abnormal echocardiogram;
- cardiomyopathy or symptoms suggesting heart failure;
- PoTS or other postural symptoms;
- an abnormal ECG or cardiac test requiring specialist interpretation; or
- a second opinion, review after cardiac investigations or ongoing cardiology care.
The appropriate assessment depends on your individual history. A diagnosis may not always be possible at the first appointment, and further investigations may be recommended.
What Your 30-Minute Consultation Includes
- a detailed review of your symptoms and how they affect you;
- your medical, medication and family history;
- a focused cardiovascular examination;
- review of relevant ECGs, blood tests, scans and clinic letters you provide;
- discussion of the likely diagnosis or possible causes;
- review of treatment options, medicines and cardiovascular risk factors; and
- a clear, personalised plan with time for your questions.
Basic observations such as pulse and blood pressure may be recorded where appropriate. Additional investigations are not automatically included in the consultation fee. If an ECG, echocardiogram, cardiac monitor, stress echo or another test is advised, the reason, arrangements and any separate cost or insurance authorisation will be discussed.
Before Your Appointment
To help make the consultation as useful as possible, please bring:
- an up-to-date list of medicines and doses;
- relevant GP or hospital letters and previous cardiac test results;
- a brief timeline of your symptoms, including triggers and duration;
- recent home blood-pressure or heart-rate readings, if available;
- your referral and insurance authorisation details, where applicable; and
- any questions you would like to discuss.
You are welcome to bring a family member or trusted person for support, subject to your consent.
Your Written Plan and Next Steps
After the consultation, you will receive a formal summary letter setting out the assessment and recommended next steps. With your agreement, this can be shared with your GP or referring clinician.
Your plan may include:
- treatment or medication recommendations;
- further cardiac investigations;
- lifestyle and cardiovascular risk advice;
- liaison with your GP or another specialist; or
- follow-up in person, by video or by telephone where clinically appropriate.

Appointments can assess concerns including chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, blackouts, high blood pressure, heart murmurs, valve disease, abnormal ECG findings, cardiomyopathy, possible heart-failure symptoms and cardiovascular risk. They are also suitable for second opinions and review after cardiac investigations.
Are tests included in the £200 consultation fee?
The £200 fee covers the 30-minute consultant appointment. Additional investigations are not automatically included. If an ECG, echocardiogram, cardiac monitor, stress echo or another test is recommended, the clinical reason, arrangements and any separate charge or insurance authorisation will be discussed.
